How to Identify Voice Types Subtypes Suzy S. Are you a soprano, alto, tenor, or bass? Learn how to determine your voice type in this guest post by Ann Arbor, MI voice teacher  Elaina R So, you want to figure out your own voice type. You probably just want to know whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor, or bass. Unfortunately, things are a little more complicated than that. The good news? It doesn’t matter as much as you think. Before you rush to the keyboard to try to figure out your voice type, keep two things in mind. First of all, how old are you? If you are under 20 (or under 22 or so if you are male), your current range is still in progress. It will likely continue to change as you get older, so you can’t figure out your voice type for a few more years. Second of all, have you had any vocal training? If not, your vocal range can change drastically as you learn how to use your voice. I can’t tell you how many times women have come into my studio insisting that they are altos, only to unlock entire octaves of range they didn’t know they had! That being said, here we go! Voice Types and Subtypes There are five broad categories of voice types: two for women and three for men. I’m using operatic voice types here, because they are the most specific than other classifications, but Ive given pop examples of each voice type as well. Soprano Soprano is the highest voice type. Even the lowest types of sopranos can sing C6 (6th C on the keyboard, counting from the bottom,) or “high C.” The highest sopranos can sing well above that. Pop music sopranos include Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, and Ellie Goulding. These voices have a lighter tambour and easy access to high notes. These are the operatic soprano subsections, in order of highest to lowest. If you listen, you’ll see just how much variety there is under the one title of soprano â€" and the other voice types as well. • Coloratura soprano (example: Lucia Popp. And me.) • Soubrette • Lyric soprano (example: Renée Fleming) • Dramatic soprano (example: Christine Goerke) Mezzo-Soprano Mezzo-sopranos are women with lower voices. They are referred to as altos in the choir world. Some women with extra-low voices are referred to as contraltos. Some mezzo sopranos can sing C6 (and rarely even higher), but most of them top out before C6. In popular music, singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Adele are mezzo-sopranos. The mezzo-soprano subsections, in order of highest to lowest, are: • Coloratura mezzo-soprano (example: Isabel Leonard) • Lyric mezzo-soprano • Dramatic mezzo-soprano • Contralto (this is actually a separate category, but I’ve combined it here because of its rarity. Example: Larissa Diadkova) Tenor Tenors are high-voiced men. They can typically sing up to a B4 in full voice; some of them can sing higher. Examples of tenors in popular music include Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and Adam Levine â€" look for easy high notes and some falsetto. There are more subsections for male voices than female voices, so here are some of them (highest to lowest): • Countertenor (this is also technically a separate category for men who sing predominantly in head voice, but it is rare. Hear it here.) • Leggero tenor (example: Luciano Pavarotti) • Lyric tenor • Spinto tenor • Dramatic tenor (example: Giuseppe Giacomini) Baritone Baritones are halfway between tenors and basses. Even the highest baritones typically can’t hit a C4, or ‘high C,” but they can sing down to a G2 or lower. Examples of baritones in popular music include Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Here are some of the more common baritone types (highest to lowest): • Lyric baritone (example: Mariusz Kwiecien) • Verdi baritone • Dramatic baritone (example: Juan Pons) Bass Basses are the lowest male voice type. To be honest, I can’t think of a single one in popular music (maybe Louis Armstrong). Looks like it’s high time we had one! Basses can sing down to E2 or lower, and their highest notes are around E4 in chest voice. In the operatic world, here are some of the subsections: • Bass-baritone (example: Luca Pisaroni) • Basso buffo • Lyric basso profundo • Dramatic basso profundo (example: Matti Salminen) Still confused about voice types? Combination Voice Types You can’t pigeonhole voices very easily, since they tend to be versatile and many of the above voice types overlap in range. In the end, it’s more a matter of the tambour of the voice, what the voice sounds best singing, and what repertoire the vocalist prefers. For example, I call myself a light lyric coloratura â€" I can sing very high, but I also sing plenty of lower repertoire. Some people just call themselves zwichen fach, which means they fluctuate between voice types. If you listen to some of the examples above and explore your range using a keyboard and good vocal technique, you may be able to figure out your voice type. The last thing you want is to waste the first five or ten minutes of your tutoria l because they're scrambling around looking for their homework or their textbook!This type of academic support is useful for plenty of different subjects including maths, physics, biology, chemistry, English, French, Spanish, German, etc.From a practical point of view, the student doesn’t have to waste time on public transport and they can study in a suitable environment.On the other hand, the parents will have to pay slightly more since the tutor’s rates will have been calculated taking the transport costs into account.Private tutorials at a student’s house are also a good way to make students feel more at home (literally). It’s was worrying because I couldn’t make the student pay double. That’s one of the main problems with teaching a student at their home.Secondary school students tend to have busy schedules (especially when they're doing their GCSEs and A Levels) and are rarely available for some of the most common working hours during the week.Private tutorials need to work around the student’s schedule. As a result, you may be expected to offer tutorials during evenings, weekends, school holidays, and bank holidays.In other words, a private tutor tends to work when everyone else isn’t working. Academic support is often presented as a way to help a student improve their grades, better understand certain aspects of their classes, and revise for exams and do test prep.Even experienced tutors aren’t miracle workers. While most people think that home tutoring takes place in the student's house, in some cases, it can be better to get help with your studies at the tutor's house because they can set up a dedicated classroom in their house or flat.Childminders can also tutor the children they’re looking after.  After all, learning games with very young children are basically like private tutorials for the young. A childminder could also help a child do their homework before their parents pick them up. Becoming a private tutor for young children could help childminders find more work and earn more money.Teaching academic support tutorials online is another way to do it. This means that there are academic tutoring jobs available to everyone with a decent internet connection.That said, it can cost you more to get started as an online tutor as you'll need to make sure your internet connection is fast enough and maybe even upgrade it. Literal translation: There’s nothing bad that doesn’t occur in the name of a greater good. What it actually means: Every cloud has a silver lining. This is one of our favorite funny Spanish sayings. It points to a belief in Spanish culture that even if an event appears negative, you should trust that it happened for a reason. Life is giving you what you need now, even if it feels rough. You can also attribute it to  the belief in a greater good, or a greater power. Échale ganas. Literal translation: Insert desire. What it actually means: Try your best. Ponte las pilas. Literal translation: Put your batteries on. What it actually means: Work hard. Es mejor pedir perdón que permiso. Literal translation: It’s better to apologize than to ask for permission. What it actually means: Do what you need to do now. Here the attitude is “you better just do what you need to do now and worry about the consequences after,” highlighting another cultural proclivity toward staying in the present moment and doing whatever is needed in that moment. The meaning behind this message is simple: you already have something thats guaranteed yours, so dont be greedy and try to grab two more that may or may not be yours. Se puso hasta las chanclas. Literal translation: He/she put themselves up to the sandals. What it actually means: He/she got hammered. There are many funny Spanish phrases that have to do with drinking. Use this one when you have a friend who got a little too carried away the night before! Palabras necias, oídos sordos. Literal translation: Annoying words, deaf ears. What it actually means: If you don’t have anything positive to say, don’t say anything at all. Nobody likes to listen to someone nagging, so its better to keep quiet! Entre la espada y la pared. Literal translation: Between the sword and the wall. What it actually means: Between a rock and a hard place. This describes a difficult situation where no matter what you do, it feels like the wrong choice. Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho. Literal translation: There’s a giant gap between the saying and the action. What it actually means: It’s easier said than done. Sometimes its easier to talk about an action getting done than to physically carry it out. Se fue de Guatemala a Guata-peor. Literal translation: It went from Guate-bad to Guata-worse. What it actually means: Things went from bad to worse. This play on words is clearly compromised in the translation, as the original saying in Spanish uses the country Guatemala, which has the word “bad” in its last two syllables. Entre broma y broma la verdad se asoma. Literal translation: Between jokes and jokes, the truth lurks. What it actually means: Jokes can reveal truths. The beautiful rhyming in Spanish is again lost in the English translation. Translation: What did one fish say to another? Nada. The word nada in Spanish can refer to the command to swim, or the word nothing. So this joke is a play-on-words Hay dos palabras que te abrirán muchas puertas: Empuje y jale. Translation: There are two words that will open many doors for you: push and pull. This hilarious little joke is another play-on-words in Spanish. ¿Qué le dijo una ganza a la otra? Venganza Translation: What did one goose say to the other? Revenge. If you separate the first syllable ven,  meaning come, from the next two, ganza meaning goose, you’ll see that the joke’s answer simultaneously reads, come goose and the word revenge. Clearly, this joke does not work in English, so if it were translated in a movie, the subtitles wouldn’t capture it well, no matter how skilled the translator is. Talk about a dad joke! Se encuentran dos abogados y uno le dice al otro: - ¿Vamos a tomar algo? -Bueno ¿de quién? Translation: There are two lawyers and one says to the other: -“Let’s get a drink.” -“Yes. From who?” In Spanish the verb tomar (“to take”) is also used to mean “to drink,” so the lawyers are “taking a drink” and “taking something from someone” simultaneously. This highlights the cultural  tendency to view lawyers as corrupt, opportunistic, and greedy. ¡Te dije que me gustan las películas viejas y buenas y tú me llevaste a una película de viejas buenas! Translation: “I told you I liked good and old movies, but you took me to see a movie with pretty women!” This play-on-words is especially complicated. While vieja means old, it also refers to a woman, and while buena usually means good, it can also mean attractive when referring to a person.
